Mission: Commission, before and after

before:

after:

I was recently hired to make a short comic to be included in the program for the first ever Deep Blues Festival in River Falls Wisconsin. It started out as a kind of mythologization of the founding of the festival based around a scene and ended up a mythologization of a scene with the festival as it's core.
I guess.

Is mythologization a word?

Anyway, some links:
Deep Blues Festival Homepage and MySpace page

Rick Saunder's original Deep Blues website

Justin DeGarmo, the illustrator responsible for the original logo design which I ruthlessly cribbed in the comic.

and, let's see... Fat Possum Records. If anyone wants to buy me the new Dinosaur Jr record, then great! Even with the money off this comission, I still can't afford to buy it myself.

Web Stuff...

Some linkage for you all:
After many months of mournful absence, the web is finally no longer Jeff Pasek-less. Go see his spankin' new site and marvel in it's splendour. I got a kick out of seeing the paintings he gave me up on his web gallery. I feel so pseudo-famous by association now. Also if you're in the Cleveland area, go check out his new show.

I've also been enjoying Robert Sergel's idiot comics of late. I dig his sense of panel composition, his nice clean line, and his formal playfulness. He uses the kind of detached humor that appeals to those of us who are really bitter at the world. The las few installments also show an amazing use of color. Good stuff.

I found him browsing comicspace. That brings it to two good things that have come solely from my involvement there.

Here's how it happened...

I know you're all dying to know how the whole baby thing went down but you're all thinking "Gee. Tim put Mostly Banal on hiatus. And besides, he's too busy with baby stuff to draw any comics right now anyway. Aw shucks and gee wiz."
Well, never fear. In steps a ghost cartoonist with MB's first ever guest strip to tell you all the really real story of what happened.
Rejoice!

Shattering the illusion (By Billy?) to give credit where it's due: my good friend Chris came up with this little ditty all by his lonesome. Thanks, Chris. You have a stellar carreer in comics ahead of you, and it all starts here.

NEW BABY!

It's a boy! (we didn't know boy or girl until he was born)
Actually, new about three days ago. Things have been crazy around here. This is the first chance I've had to post this stuff.

Jamon Anthony Godek

born 7-6-07 @ 11:22 am
8 lb 10 oz
21 inches long

Everyone is doing well. Adjusting to being a family of four now.

Sophie is a little jealous of her brother getting our attentions, but all in all is taking it quite well.

We're all healthy and back from the hospital now. Being a dad the second time around is weird. It's like your experience the first tim around has shown you all the things to avoid freaking out about so you freak out about all new things. Our biggest issue has been helping Sophie's transition from only child to big sister. It's gonna take a lot of getting used to (for everyone).
Jamon himself has been a remarkably mellow baby. He has a voracious appetite and let's us know when he's hungry, but other than that is pretty laid back.
In case you're wondering, the name Jamon (Jay-mon) comes from Rachelle's family. Anthony (and Godek, I guess) from mine.

Babies...

crazy stuff, huh?
