! - page eleven

You know, I haven't read many reviews of Yuichi Yokoyama's New Engineering that say anything beyond "It was weird. I liked it." (or sometimes, "I liked it, it was weird"), but Ryan Tokola manages a step better in his review of the book
He makes some good points about the "architectural" treatment of the stories and the role that the incidental material plays in the reading experience which only really touch on part of what makes this book really great.

And it is great, but like all great thing it's not always obvious why. Sure, the character design is "out there" - that's cool. There's a stylish, otherworldly disconnect throughout. And the omnipresent "sound effects" give the stories amazing tension - but fuck all that, really (isn't that just a hyper stylized version of what happened whenever Adam West socked Cesar Romero in the jaw, after all?) It's the treatment of "story" that blows me away here.

There is nothing so much as plot - or characterization - or dramatic tension/resolution here (not in any traditional sense). What we have instead are finely choreographed construction scenes, or battles, or whatever... that ultimately lead... nowhere. These are narratives- sure - but not "stories." And yet it's as engaging a read as any you'll find in comics. It reinforces a belief I have that runs counter to what so many express - that "telling a story" is not necessarily the be all and end all of all comics. Yuichi Yokoyama conveys his message without the traditional constraints of storytelling that everyone says are so all-fired important.
His book, and comics as a whole is better for it. New Engineering is a fantastic, and important, and challenging work.

That is to say, It was weird. I liked it.

sketches+links = lazy cartoonist?

Some more sketches for the new project. It occurs to me that I may be doing so much prep work this time only to avoid actually starting in on the comic. So... next week, no matter how comfortable I am with the "look." That gives me one week to either nail it down or not. Sink or swim.

So, on to people that can actually finish comics. Whole pages at a time, even!
----
If I had, like ten bucks (or any money) to spare I'd be buying me some Trains are... Mint. Seriously. This page alone? Brilliant! (link from Derik)

Also, my buddy Neal is in fine form, Illustrating for Sam Costello at Split Lip. By "fine form" I mean, really kind of creepy. Neal shows a real propensity toward the darker parts of old folk songs like the one they're adapting here. Then again, a lot of those songs are pretty dark.

(Vicious murder is a theme in these links, I guess.)

No murder (so far), but still kind of vicious, is Dash Shaw's new webcomic (yeah, that's right) BodyWorld, for which he has a full prelude posted (regular updates are promised starting in January).
I do so hope that Shaw doesn't get too aggressively distopian with this one. The generic trappings are sometimes an easy mark for reflecting contemporary wierdness. A lot of young cartoonists are leaning that way lately, but Shaw has shown an eye for a more naturalistic wierdness (if that makes sense) in his previous work that speaks to me a little more (that's what it's all about, right? Speaking to me personally?). Way to early to make a judgement though. At least he'll have me for the ride. (link also via Derik, who has good taste)

Peanuts fan?

That gag I mentioned on Monday? It's up now, here. Filler for William G and Sahsha Andrade's It's About Girls while the comic is on hiatus. The gag makes a little more sense if you know the characters, so by all means go and read the archives.

For the observant and curious, Mostly Banal is my once and future diary strip.

Note: Ill-conceived and irritating (though brief) rant depublished.

Web Stuff...

Some linkage for you all:
After many months of mournful absence, the web is finally no longer Jeff Pasek-less. Go see his spankin' new site and marvel in it's splendour. I got a kick out of seeing the paintings he gave me up on his web gallery. I feel so pseudo-famous by association now. Also if you're in the Cleveland area, go check out his new show.

I've also been enjoying Robert Sergel's idiot comics of late. I dig his sense of panel composition, his nice clean line, and his formal playfulness. He uses the kind of detached humor that appeals to those of us who are really bitter at the world. The las few installments also show an amazing use of color. Good stuff.

I found him browsing comicspace. That brings it to two good things that have come solely from my involvement there.

Almost Comics...

Link:Comixpedia

If anybody cares, here's full disclosure:
That second panel was inferred and extrapolated from the posters comment, but I think it communicates his drift okay. He wasn't making any kind of judgement call, either (i.e. multimedia = not comics = BAD!) just arguing "purity" of form. I think the multimedia distinction is really a gray area in comics (a gray area I love to see played with) and not necessarily as absolute as any comics/not comics discussion. Any distinctions at these levels are splitting hairs anyway, and only important for categorical or formal concerns (for most people that reads "not important at all")

What? Nobody cares?
Thought so...
